We recommend a transmission service every 12 months or 20,000 km, whichever comes first. Regular servicing lets us check fluid quality, spot early wear and rectify small issues before they become major repairs. If you tow, carry heavy loads in a Berlingo van, or do a lot of stop-start city driving in Perth’s heat, your Citroën may need servicing more often. Citroën has used several types of transmission over the years, and each has its own typical faults. These are the issues we see most often:

Older four-speed automatics: Earlier Citroën automatics, such as the AL4, can develop faults in the valve body and pressure control solenoids. Symptoms include harsh shifts, flare between gears and the car dropping into limp mode.

Automated manual gearboxes: Some models, including versions of the C4 Picasso, C4 Cactus and Berlingo, use an automated manual (badged EGS, ETG or Sensodrive). Wear in the clutch or the actuator that operates it can cause jerky take-offs and hesitant gear changes.

Six- and eight-speed EAT automatics: Newer models such as the C5 Aircross and C5 X use EAT automatics. They’re generally smooth and efficient, but old or degraded transmission fluid can lead to rough shifting.

Torque converter problems: A worn torque converter, the component that transfers power from the engine to the gearbox, can cause shuddering or a loss of drive.

Fluid leaks: Leaking seals or cooler lines reduce fluid levels, which leads to overheating and accelerated wear.
